A man of 35 has probably been exposed to 1 to 3 HPV strains but not all 9 covered by Gardasil 9. Vaccination cannot cure an existing infection with a strain you have already met, but it fully protects against the other 6 to 8 strains you have not yet met. There is no biological reason vaccine antibodies would fail to work in a 50-year-old.
